What are good gym shoes?

I am going to start going to the gym now but I don't own any athletic shoes. What type of shoes should I get that are cheap, comfortable, and appropriate for working out? I am a women btw. Any links or info is appreciated!

Generally you'll want some shoes that provide a comfortable wear, but also non-slip.

Cross-training shoes are good because they provide a wider sole that running shoes do not. It keeps you from rolling your ankle.

New Balance and Asics make great cross trainers and they are super comfortable.
