Shirts

Besides loincloths, shirts are perhaps the oldest known form of underwear for men and women. Historically, the shirts were long, simple pieces that were used under the clothing of men and women, beginning in medieval times. Although never shirts really disappeared until the early 20th century, changing fashions variations on the shirt needs to be created. Perhaps the biggest changes in the history of underwear occurred with the appearance of the corset.

Corsets began in the Renaissance, when straight, figures youth became unfashionable and cleavage became the new ideal. Corsets from this period were fairly rudimentary and fit easily under the shirts of the time. As underwear became more elaborate and clothing styles changed, however, was necessary to find a garment that hid the corset without adding the desired volume. The solution was the camisole.
