Adults with autism are receiving help for daily life

CAITLIN Kenny writes a list of targets on a white board for his client, Jonathan Ross, as the last records of their meals on a computer in his apartment in New Haven. Kenny is helping Ross, who has Asperger syndrome, their diet and social skills as part of a pilot program conducted by the Department of State Development Service. (CLOE POISSON / January 9, 2008)

Above the computer Jonathan Ross' recording a list of their long-term goals: Lose 200 pounds. Get a job. Be more socially active.

Together it is another note saying: "I believe in myself," written five times.

"So you've been saying?" asked Caitlin Kenny, his life skills coach, referring to the belief of the "note.

"Yes," Ross replies. He has been repeating aloud once in the morning and again later in the day.

If you were to meet with Jonathan Ross, you may not know that there something different about him. He is perfectly affable, has interesting observations and lives in a well organized department.

But for years, Ross, who is 47, has had trouble making friends, meeting their goals in life and independent living. Finally, a few years ago, a doctor says he has the syndrome Asperger disorder is considered a mild form of autism.

Asked how Asperger Syndrome is that it affects, Ross talks about his feelings: "There is a connection that has to be done, and I have no connection" to form relationships with people.

"If there are seven things in life that have to do things, I have six of them, and that thing session, I have, "Ross said." It's kind of learning experience you have that I do not.

"I feel like I could get my hands all one: Perhaps I could get some different life."

Now Ross is hoping that his life could change for the better. A couple of years, the legislature approved a pilot project of $ 1 million to help adults of normal intelligence with diagnoses of what is called autism spectrum. The spectrum ranges from people in serious difficulty processing and understanding the social and emotional aspects of communication - the with the diagnosis of classic autism - a much milder forms of the disorder such as Asperger syndrome.

With about 1 in 150 children with a diagnosis on the autism spectrum disorder, is the fastest growing developmental disability in the United Kingdom States, as the Autism Society of America. The pilot project is the first to offer a comprehensive set of services for adults with normal intelligence in the spectrum of autism. Launched in New Haven Area in July 2006 the program serves 28 people, state officials expect more money to expand in the Hartford area this year.

"Our mission is for them to lead independent lives, "said Kathy Reddington, who is the coordinator of autism for the state Department of Developmental Services. James Loomis, a psychologist who is an expert in autism and disorders leading a social skills group for the pilot, said that in some cases of adults with this disorder have "negotiated a life and that type of front and do what they do. We try to get a job that is more satisfying, more fulfilling lives. "

Often it is both work and social interactions around it that can cause problems, Loomis.

People in the spectrum can be taken too literally and comments often do not understand sarcasm or misinterpret facial expressions or gestures.

For example, Loomis, a customer often thought of a chief use of the phrase, "Give me a break" meant that something had broken.

Peter F. Gerhardt, president of the Organization for Autism Research in Arlington, Va., said that Connecticut is a leader in recognizing the benefits' economic and human resources "to provide such service to adults with autism spectrum disorders.

"People with autism tend to be quite significant under-served after graduation from high school," said Gerhardt. "The people with Asperger syndrome tend to be more or less ignored by the post-21 system, because when they do a 30 minute interview can be presented as a bit odd, but not come across as having a disability truth. "

However, he said, these people do not require services in an "intermittent, but consistent. "With help, he said, can move from public resources need to contribute.

Although he had worked for 20 years, Ross had balance had trouble finding work since he was fired three years ago and in that time her physical health has declined.

He gained weight and his diabetes worsened. Their day is often spent alone in front of his computer or driving around New Haven.

Since joining the pilot program in November, has a date book full of events and appointments. Kenny helps you with multiple skills: development of a healthy diet, cooking, exercising, going to activities known cultural and call.

Through the program has also been linked to a job developer, a nutritionist and after attending a group session weekly social skills.

Ross said his priority right now, and something that it hopes will help him a job, is to lose weight.

"What do you have for breakfast today?" Kenny asked her when she arrives. Ross says there was an egg and cheese at McDonald's.

"That's good - under two. Are you hungry?" said Kenny, who works with Ross five days a week. Ross said he did not.

And then on a white board created a special place in the room Ross, Kenny clears guidelines last week and replaces them with new suggestions from the nutritionist: put the sugar-gelatin free gelatin and pudding, go to the gym five times a week, will continue to buy yogurt and fruit for snacks and lunch at home three or four times a week.

"I lost 10 pounds already," said Ross, who began the program in November. Ross's family has been very pleased with the pilot. His brother, Michael Ross, said: "He has not had this kind of service at any time, his life.

"What has just begun filling an empty ... Not that I have an existence, but this is a program that is giving a lot of others and hope for a more fulfilling life. "

Jonathan Ross said that the most important he has learned through the pilot: "I am not alone in having these kinds of feelings, I am not alone."

Participants in the pilot vary long and are the twentysomethings who were diagnosed with autism as toddlers and services have had since then, and people like Ross, who are in their 40s and 50s, but only recently discovered that are on the autism spectrum.

For younger customers, the program provides services to fill the void that occurs when age outside the education system. Lois Rosenwald, co-director of the Connecticut Autism Spectrum Resource Center, was instrumental in developing the pilot program. "We put a lot of energy in the birth to 3 and anything through the teen years, but depending on when they graduate, they fall off the end of land. "

"Why put resources, energy and money on them and then have nothing when we know that if our young people are supported in the next phase, which is going to do well, "he said.

Shannon McEvoy is one of the young adults with Asperger syndrome, that had all services the way to school and now at age 24 is trying to figure out what I could do.

With the help of the pilot project staff working with Bureau of Rehabilitation Services, McEvoy is now a volunteer position, assisting with recreation programs in a nursing home in town. I love the work and it is hoped that eventually could pay up to work in the field.

"People here like me," said McEvoy. "They like to see a smiley face, it makes them feel better. "

McEvoy has a mentor through the program that meets with her a couple of times a week for review skills, as the budget or how to do laundry, and also to ensure having fun. They have gone to museums, mysticism and movies. She also has a developer working and attending the same social skills group that does Ross.

McEvoy said the social skills program has helped much. "If something makes me angry, I was taught different ways to handle it." McEvoy said.

For Yvonne Murry of Beacon Falls pilot project has transformed his life. With your help, found a home education program through which you can obtain a high school diploma and has also found a post work at home that is perfectly suited to her puzzle is correct.

Through the program, now has a "trainer of education" who is helping with their schoolwork, a job developer who helped him find work, a skill trainer for life that has taught him to cook, and assists the social skills group. Her next goal is to get your driver's license.

She said the project has helped to "explore other options and meeting different people ... My inner world has opened up and I'm not as scared as before problems occur. "
